Stage 2 Activating Identities and Futures (AIF) student Ruby has recently completed an inspiring and personal project titled Teenage Guide to Gluten Free-Dom.
Originally beginning as a gluten-free cookbook, Ruby’s project evolved into a creative and informative guide designed specifically for teenagers who have been diagnosed with coeliac disease. Combining recipes, health information, personal stories, interviews, and practical advice, the guide aims to help young people feel supported, informed, and less alone in their experiences.
Through this project, Ruby explored how coeliac disease has shaped her identity, lifestyle, and daily experiences. She reflected on her own diagnosis journey, researched coeliac disease in depth, and interviewed others with lived experiences, including family members and individuals living gluten-free. This allowed her to better understand the different perspectives and challenges people face when managing the condition.
A major focus of Ruby’s work was creating a resource that was engaging and accessible for teenagers. After receiving feedback from family members, she redesigned many pages to make them more visual, easier to read, and more relatable for her target audience. Throughout the process, Ruby developed strong skills in communication, organisation, research, design, and self-reflection.
The final product demonstrates not only academic growth, but also courage, empathy, and creativity. By sharing her own experiences, Ruby hopes to raise awareness about coeliac disease and support other teenagers navigating a gluten-free lifestyle. She has even expressed interest in printing more or even publishing the guide in the future.
We are incredibly proud of Ruby’s dedication, resilience, and willingness to create something meaningful that may positively impact others in the community. Congratulations, Ruby, on such a thoughtful and impressive achievement.
